Villa Balbiano Wedding: Costs, Capacity, Spaces and Photography Guide

Lake Como Diary — A venue guide by Nadia Fraqair

Villa Balbiano is a 17th-century villa on the western shore of Lake Como, in Ossuccio, rented for exclusive-use weddings of 40 to 200 guests. Its published event fees start at about €50,000 for a single day without accommodation and rise to €100,000–€250,000 for a two- or three-day wedding weekend, before catering, flowers and production. It is one of the most cinematic places to marry on the lake, and one of the most regulated.

I know Villa Balbiano best from the water, where I photograph couples, and brides and grooms on their wedding day, on private boats in front of its lakeside façade and gardens. This guide gathers what couples ask me about it: what it really costs, how many guests it holds, where the ceremony and dinner take place, the local rules every planner must follow, and how to photograph it at its most beautiful.

The Story of Villa Balbiano

Few villas on Lake Como have lived as many lives as Balbiano. In the 16th century the land belonged to the family of the historian Paolo Giovio. At the end of that century it passed to Tolomeo Gallio, who built the first villa, in a design traditionally attributed to the architect Pellegrino Tibaldi. In the 1630s the Gallio family levelled the ground into an Italian garden and covered the rooms with Baroque frescoes: medallions, cherubs and painted illusions that still survive.

In 1787 the villa was bought by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, a collector and patron of the arts who filled it with statues, fountains, avenues and pergolas, and gathered writers such as the poet Giuseppe Parini in its library. On the wooded promontory nearby he built a small retreat he called "Balbianino". Today it is known as Villa del Balbianello, so the two most famous villas of the Tremezzina share the same founder.

The 19th century turned part of the estate into a silk spinning mill. The 20th century divided it, until a series of restorations brought it back: in 1960, in 1982 by a silk industrialist who planted rare trees and flowers, and from 2011 with the French designer Jacques Garcia, who restored the historic rooms for a new life as a private residence.

That new life has been very visible. Villa Balbiano was a set for Ridley Scott's House of Gucci in 2021, and in 2026 it appeared in The Devil Wears Prada 2, where the trailer shows Andy and Emily gliding across the water towards it. It is, quite literally, a villa made for the camera.

How Much Does a Villa Balbiano Wedding Cost?

Villa Balbiano is rented for exclusive use, and the price depends on two things: how many days you take the villa, and how many guests you invite. These are the venue fees from the villa's published event price list, as reported in February 2026. Treat them as a guide and always ask for the current list, because rates change from year to year.

Rental Guests Venue fee
One day, no accommodation Up to 40 About €50,000
Two days, one night, with accommodation Up to 55 About €100,000
Three days, two nights, with accommodation Up to 55 About €150,000
Three days, two nights, with accommodation Up to 100 About €200,000
Three days, two nights, with accommodation Up to 200 About €250,000

A refundable security deposit of around €35,000 is usually added. You may also see much lower figures online, from about €21,000 a day: those are holiday-rental rates for staying at the villa, not event fees.

What the venue fee does not include

  • Catering and bar. All food and drink comes from an outside caterer. Planners estimate about €250–€400 or more per guest for a full-service dinner.
  • Production. Furniture and tableware hire, flowers, lighting, sound, staff and electricity for event equipment.
  • Your planner. The villa has no in-house event planner, so you will need your own to coordinate suppliers and permits.
  • Extra hours. Extending the indoor party beyond 1 am has been quoted at about €3,000 an hour.
  • Accommodation beyond the villa. Most guests stay in nearby hotels.
  • Photography and film. Booked separately with your photographer and videographer.

Put together, an intimate wedding of 40–60 guests at Villa Balbiano commonly reaches €600,000–€800,000, and a full weekend for 100–200 guests can pass €1.5 million. For a wider view of budgets on the lake, read how much a Lake Como wedding costs.

Guest Capacity and Accommodation

Villa Balbiano hosts events of up to 200 guests. Some listings quote larger numbers for the gardens, but events here are closely controlled, and the price list is built around 40, 55, 100 and 200 guests.

The number that matters most is the one for bad weather. The historic rooms are beautiful but intimate, and seat only about 50–60 guests for dinner. For anything larger, ask your planner for a covered plan B on the terrace or lawn before you sign.

The main villa has six suites for 12 guests, including a lake-view suite for getting ready. With the wing and the smaller villino on the estate, the villa sleeps around 30 people in total. The rest of your guests will stay nearby, in Lenno, Tremezzo and across the water in Bellagio. See where to stay in Lake Como for the best bases.

The Spaces: Ceremony, Dinner and Party

The estate covers about three acres between the old Via Regina and the lake. Each space has its own role in the day.

Space Best for What to know
Lakeside terrace The ceremony, then dinner In front of the main façade, so the bride can make her entrance from the villa's door
The gardens Cocktail hour and portraits An Italian garden from the 1630s, with statues, fountains and century-old trees
The avenue Arrivals and portraits Box hedges, plane trees and cypresses lead from the road to the villa
Pool courtyard Welcome drinks and the party Ideal for a pool party the day before or a relaxed brunch after
Secret garden An intimate aperitivo A smaller, enclosed garden for up to about 100 guests
Frescoed rooms Small dinners, the after-party Baroque frescoes from the 1630s; about 50–60 guests seated

A wedding weekend at Balbiano usually moves through these spaces over two or three days: a welcome evening, the ceremony and dinner on the terrace, then a final brunch by the pool. That rhythm is why I suggest weekend photography coverage here rather than a single day.

The Rules Every Couple Should Know

Villa Balbiano's events have a history that every couple considering it should understand. In November 2023 the municipality of Tremezzina stopped weddings and events at the villa after complaints about noise, noting that the property is designated as a residence. In spring 2024 the town approved new rules for occasional events at its historic residences, and the villa reopened for celebrations in May 2024 under clear conditions: it stays mainly residential through the year, events must respect the local noise limits, and guests should arrive by lake wherever possible, to keep traffic off the narrow lakeside road.

In practice, this shapes your day:

  • Music: the most recent published rules end outdoor music at 9:30 pm. The party continues indoors until 1 am, with paid extensions.
  • A symbolic ceremony: ceremonies at the villa are symbolic. If you want a legally binding marriage, plan a short civil ceremony at a town hall first, or marry at home before you travel.
  • Your own planner and caterer: both are required, and all suppliers must be approved by the villa, with technical site inspections before the day.
  • Small print: smoking outside the permitted areas carries a heavy fine, and opening the historic main gate or adding hours costs extra.

None of this is unusual for a private historic residence, but it means a Balbiano wedding should be planned by someone who knows the villa and the town. Ask your planner for the current rules in writing before you sign.

Arriving by Water

Villa Balbiano was built to be seen from the lake, and the lake is still the most beautiful way to arrive. The villa has its own landing, marked by Venetian-striped mooring poles, and a stone staircase rises from the water straight to its door. A classic wooden boat can bring the bride to her ceremony, take the two of you out for portraits during the cocktail hour, or carry you away at the end of the night. The town's own rules favour it too: every guest who arrives by boat is one less car on the Via Regina.

Guests staying in Tremezzo, Lenno or Bellagio can be brought in by private water taxi, which turns the journey into part of the celebration. Read my guide to a private boat tour on Lake Como for the boats, the routes and what they cost.

Photographing Villa Balbiano: Behind the Lens

From the shore you see Villa Balbiano in pieces: a gate, a wall, the tops of the cypresses. From the water you see all of it at once: the stone staircase rising from the lake to the door, the ivy-covered boathouse beside it, the clipped hedges, the cypresses and the hills of the Tremezzina behind.

The best light falls on the villa in the afternoon. That is when I plan time on the water, because the warm light brings out the colour of the façade and the gardens, and the boat can come quite close, close enough to frame the whole villa behind a couple without losing a single detail. For a wedding, that means planning the portraits on the water during the late-afternoon cocktail hour, before the music moves indoors.

"Villa Balbiano was built to be seen from the lake. Give your photographer twenty minutes on the water, and you will have the image of the whole weekend."

Nadia Fraqair

Some practical advice for your timeline:

  • Ceremony in the mid-afternoon, so the terrace is softly lit and guests are not facing a low sun.
  • Twenty to thirty minutes on a boat during the cocktail hour, for portraits with the villa, Isola Comacina and the mountains.
  • Dinner on the terrace at sunset, then the party indoors, under the 1630s frescoes.
  • Getting ready in the lake-view suite, where the light through the tall windows is perfect for the dress and the details.

Villa Balbiano or Villa del Balbianello?

The names are almost the same, the two villas are neighbours, and both were shaped by Cardinal Durini, so couples often confuse them. They offer very different weddings. Villa Balbiano is a private residence rented for exclusive use: you have the whole villa, its suites and its gardens for a weekend. Villa del Balbianello is a historic villa run by FAI, the Italian National Trust, on a wooded point a few minutes away: it hosts ceremonies and celebrations under its own rules, without overnight stays. For everything about the second, read my Villa del Balbianello wedding guide, and to compare all the great venues on the lake, see the best Lake Como wedding venues.

Frequently Asked Questions About Villa Balbiano Weddings

How much does it cost to get married at Villa Balbiano?

The venue fee alone starts at about €50,000 for one day without accommodation and reaches about €100,000–€250,000 for a two- or three-day wedding with accommodation, depending on guest numbers. Catering, production, planning and photography are extra, so total budgets usually start around €600,000.

How many guests can Villa Balbiano hold?

Up to 200 guests for an event. Indoors, the historic rooms seat only about 50–60, so larger weddings need a covered plan B outside.

Can you have a legal wedding at Villa Balbiano?

Ceremonies at the villa are symbolic. Couples who want a legally binding marriage hold a short civil ceremony at a town hall, or marry at home before travelling, and celebrate at the villa.

Can guests stay at Villa Balbiano?

Yes. The main villa has six suites for 12 guests, and the whole estate sleeps around 30. Other guests stay in Lenno, Tremezzo or Bellagio.

What time does the music end at Villa Balbiano?

Under the most recent published rules, outdoor music ends at 9:30 pm and the party continues indoors until 1 am, with paid extensions. Confirm the current rules with your planner before you book.

Are weddings still allowed at Villa Balbiano?

Yes. After a stop in November 2023, the villa reopened for events in May 2024 under new municipal rules for occasional events at historic residences, with limits on noise and a preference for guests arriving by lake.

How do guests get to Villa Balbiano?

The villa is in Ossuccio, about 30 km from Como and around 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Milan Malpensa airport. Arriving by boat is the most beautiful way, and the one the local rules prefer.

Is Villa Balbiano the same as Villa del Balbianello?

No. They are neighbouring villas in the Tremezzina, both linked to Cardinal Durini. Villa Balbiano is a private residence rented for exclusive-use weddings; Villa del Balbianello is run by FAI, the Italian National Trust.

Plan Your Villa Balbiano Wedding Photography

A wedding at Villa Balbiano deserves to be seen the way the villa was meant to be seen: from the terrace, from the gardens, and from the water in the afternoon light. I photograph and film the whole celebration as one story, with the time on the lake built into your timeline.
