Private Boat Tour on Lake Como: Routes, Prices and How to Book

Lake Como Diary — A guide by Nadia Fraqair

A private boat tour on Lake Como is the most beautiful way to see the lake: your own boat, your own captain and a route shaped around you, from the pastel houses of Varenna to the gardens of Bellagio and the loggia of Villa del Balbianello. With a captain, expect to pay around €175–€300 an hour for a modern motorboat and €300–€600 an hour for a classic wooden boat. Two hours is the sweet spot for most couples.

I spend a large part of every season on the water, photographing proposals, engagements and celebrations from private boats. This guide gathers everything I tell couples before their first boat trip on Lake Como: which boat to choose, which route to take, what it really costs, when the light is best, and how to book.

Lake Como private boat tour at a glance

  • Price: about €175–€300 per hour for a modern motorboat with captain, €300–€600 per hour for a classic wooden boat, and from about €2,000 for a vintage Riva
  • Ideal length: 2 hours for the central lake, 3–4 hours to add Villa del Balbianello or a stop ashore
  • Best departure: Bellagio, Varenna, Bellano or Tremezzo for the central lake; Como for the villas of the southern branch
  • Best months: May, June and September; early morning for calm water, late afternoon for golden light
  • Licence: not needed with a captain; self-drive boats up to 40 hp can be hired without one
  • For couples: the private boat proposal package, with photography and film

Private Boat Tour, Shared Tour, Boat Hire or Ferry?

There are four ways onto the water on Lake Como, and each one suits a very different day.

Option How it works Typical price Best for
Public ferry Fixed routes and timetables between the villages A few euros per crossing Getting from village to village
Shared boat tour A small group on a set route, usually about an hour From about €60 per person Seeing the villas on a budget
Self-drive boat hire You drive a 40 hp boat, no licence needed From about €100 per hour, fuel often extra Families and confident adults
Private boat tour with captain Your boat, your route, your timing About €175–€600 per hour, depending on the boat Couples, celebrations, proposals and photographs

The public ferry is the lake's bus. Boats run by Navigazione Laghi link the villages on fixed timetables, and the short crossings between Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio take around fifteen minutes. From Como to Bellagio, the fast hydrofoil takes about 45 minutes and the slow ferry closer to two hours. It is the cheapest way to move around the lake, but in summer the boats are full and the timetable decides your day.

A shared boat tour puts you on a small boat with other visitors for a set route, usually from Como or Bellagio. It is good value for seeing the villas, but you share the deck, the stops and the photographs.

Self-drive boat hire makes you the captain. Boats with engines up to 40 hp can be driven without a licence, so it is a popular choice for families and friends. The catch: someone has to drive, navigate and watch for ferries, and that person never fully relaxes.

A private boat tour with a captain is the one I recommend to couples. The boat is yours, the route is yours, and the captain knows where the water is calm, where the villas look their best and how to time the light. You can toast, talk, swim, propose, or simply sit side by side and watch Bellagio drift past.

How Much Does a Private Boat Tour on Lake Como Cost?

The price of a private boat on Lake Como depends mostly on two things: the boat, and the time you spend on it. These are the ranges I see across private boat tours on the lake in the 2026 season. Most are priced per boat, not per person, for up to six or eight guests.

Boat Typical price What it feels like
Self-drive 40 hp boat From about €100 per hour, fuel often extra Simple, fun and independent; you are the captain
Modern motorboat with captain About €175–€300 per hour Fast, comfortable and flexible; covers more of the lake
Classic wooden boat with captain About €300–€600 per hour The Lake Como look: varnished wood, a slower and more elegant pace
Vintage Riva (Aquarama, Tritone) From about €2,000 per tour The icon of the lake; a collector's boat for a once-in-a-lifetime day

Most couples book two hours, so in practice a private boat tour on Lake Como costs roughly €350–€600 on a modern motorboat and €600–€1,200 on a classic wooden boat.

What changes the price

  • The boat. A classic varnished wooden boat costs more than a modern motorboat, and a vintage Riva is in a category of its own.
  • The departure point. From Como, the first part of every tour is spent travelling up the lake. Start from Bellagio, Varenna, Bellano or Tremezzo and you are in the most beautiful part of the lake from the first minutes.
  • Fuel. Some operators include it. Others add a supplement, sometimes €50–€100 an hour, paid on board. Always ask.
  • Extras. Prosecco, an aperitivo, towels and a swimming stop are often included. Villa entrance tickets, lunch ashore and photography are not.
  • The date. Sunset slots and summer weekends are the first to go.

The Best Private Boat Tour Routes on Lake Como

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y. Its three branches meet at Bellagio, and the water between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo, the central lake, is the heart of every great boat trip. With a private boat the route is yours to choose, but these are the four I suggest most often.

1. The central lake: Bellagio, Varenna and Villa Melzi (1–2 hours)

If you only have time for one boat trip on Lake Como, make it this one. Leaving Bellagio, you round Punta Spartivento, the tip of the peninsula where the lake divides, then follow the shore past the gardens of Villa Melzi and its little Moorish pavilion by the water.

Across the lake, Varenna appears as a ribbon of ochre, rose and yellow houses, with the bell tower of San Giorgio behind them and Castello di Vezio on the hill above. Glide past the terraces of Villa Monastero and, just south of the village, Fiumelatte: a stream only about 250 metres long, often called the shortest river in Italy.

Couples who follow Lake Como Diary will recognise these places from the Villa Melzi proposal in Episode 2 and the Villa Monastero proposal in Episode 1.

2. The Tremezzina: Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello and Isola Comacina (2–3 hours)

South of Menaggio, the western shore becomes the Tremezzina, a string of villages with some of the grandest gardens on the lake. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo looks straight across the water to Bellagio, its terraces bright with azaleas in spring.

Further south, Villa del Balbianello sits on the wooded point of Lavedo in Lenno. From a boat, the whole peninsula reveals itself, loggia and terraces and all, in a way it never does on foot. Just beyond lies Isola Comacina, the only island on Lake Como.

If you want to step ashore at Villa del Balbianello, check the opening days before you book: the villa is usually closed on Mondays and Wednesdays, and it opens seasonally. Dreaming of proposing there? See the Villa del Balbianello proposal package.

3. The Como branch: Villa d'Este, Laglio and Nesso (2–3 hours from Como)

Staying in Como or Cernobbio? The southern branch has its own character: narrower, greener and lined with grand villas. A classic route passes Villa Olmo and Villa Erba, then the gardens of Villa d'Este at Cernobbio, continues to Laglio, the village made famous by George Clooney's villa, and crosses to Nesso, where a waterfall tumbles through a narrow gorge into the lake beneath an old stone bridge.

To reach Bellagio from Como and come back without rushing, allow at least three hours.

4. The golden-hour cruise (about 1 hour)

The last hour of light is the most romantic time to be on the water, and it is when I photograph most of my couples. Plan it with the geography in mind. Varenna, on the eastern shore, faces west and keeps the warm evening light on its façades. The western shore around Tremezzo falls into shadow earlier, because the sun drops behind the mountains before the official sunset.

So the best sunset cruise usually looks east: towards Varenna and the glowing mountains, with the water turning silver around you.

Where should your boat tour start?

  • Bellagio: the centre of everything, ideal for the central lake and the Tremezzina.
  • Varenna: easy to reach by train from Milan, perfect for the central lake and a golden-hour cruise.
  • Bellano: a quiet village just north of Varenna, on the same train line from Milan, with private docks and the central lake a short ride away.
  • Tremezzo, Lenno or Menaggio: closest to Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello.
  • Como or Cernobbio: the right choice if you are staying there, but expect to spend part of your time travelling.

Still choosing your base? Read where to stay in Lake Como.

How Long Should a Boat Trip on Lake Como Be?

  • 1 hour: one area of the lake, a toast at sunset or a proposal on the water. Short, but magical if you start in the right place.
  • 2 hours: the sweet spot. Enough for the central lake without rushing, time to slow down in front of the villas and, in summer, a swim.
  • 3–4 hours: add Villa del Balbianello and Isola Comacina, or stop ashore in Bellagio or Varenna for a gelato or an aperitivo.
  • Half day or full day: for a tour from Como to the central lake and back, or a long lunch at a lakeside restaurant you reach by boat.

The Best Time for a Boat Tour on Lake Como

By season

  • April and May: fresh green mountains, villa gardens in flower and fewer boats on the water. Bring a layer: the air on the lake is cool.
  • June to August: long days, warm water and the best months for swimming from the boat. Also the busiest, so book early and avoid the middle of the day.
  • September and October: my favourite months. Softer light, calmer villages and warm afternoons. Sunset comes earlier, which makes golden hour easier to plan.
  • November to March: quiet and dramatic, with snow on the peaks on clear days. Fewer boats run, but a covered boat on a sunny winter afternoon can be unforgettable. Watch a November proposal on the water in Episode 3.

By time of day

Early morning is when the lake is at its calmest, often like glass, and the villages are still waking up. Midday in summer is the busiest time on the water, with ferries and boats everywhere. Late afternoon and golden hour bring the warmest light of the day, the light I recommend for photographs.

The lake has its own winds, too. A northerly breeze, the Tivano, usually blows in the early morning, and the Breva rises from the south in the afternoon. A good captain plans the route around them, so the water stays smooth where you want to slow down.

A Private Boat on Lake Como for Couples

Most of my days on the water are with couples, and the boat is almost always the part of the day they remember most: no crowds, no one else in the frame, just the two of them and the lake.

A proposal on the water

A private boat is one of the most intimate places to propose on Lake Como. Your partner thinks it is simply a beautiful cruise. The photography can be presented as a gift for your holiday, so a camera on board raises no questions. The captain knows exactly where to slow down, and the boat drifts to a stop in front of the view you chose together in advance.

Watch the private boat proposal near Villa del Balbianello in Episode 6, then see everything included in the private boat proposal package. For every other way to propose on the lake, read the Lake Como proposal guide.

The celebration after the yes

Sometimes the question is asked on land and the boat comes straight after: a toast, the ring catching the light, the first minutes alone as an engaged couple. That is the day the Varenna proposal package is built around: a yes on a private terrace at Villa Monastero, then a private boat on the lake.

Engagement, honeymoon and anniversary photos

A boat gives photographs something no terrace can: distance and movement. Close frames on board catch hands, the ring and the wind in your hair. Wider frames place the two of you against a whole village, which is only possible from the water. I plan the route around the light, so that Varenna or Bellagio glow behind you at the right moment.

"On land you choose a spot. On the water, the whole lake becomes your backdrop."

Can You Rent a Boat on Lake Como?

Yes. Self-drive boats can be hired in Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and many smaller villages, usually by the hour.

  • No licence needed up to 40 hp. In Italy you can drive a boat without a licence if the engine is under 40.8 hp (30 kW), which is why most self-drive boats on the lake have 40 hp engines.
  • Age. Each operator sets its own minimum age, usually 18 and sometimes 21.
  • Fuel. Often charged separately, so ask before you sign.
  • The briefing. You will get a short lesson before you leave: how to drive, where to go, and how to keep well clear of the ferries and their landing stages.

Self-drive or captain? Self-drive is fun and good value for families and friends. For couples, I always suggest a captain. Whoever is driving can't toast, can't be in the photographs and can't stop watching the water. With a captain, you are both present for the whole trip, and you gain a local who knows the quiet bays, the stories of the villas and where the light falls.

How to Book a Private Boat Tour on Lake Como

  1. Start from where you stay. A boat that leaves from your village saves time and transfers. If you can choose, stay in Bellagio, Varenna or the Tremezzina.
  2. Choose the boat. A modern motorboat for comfort and speed, a classic wooden boat for the Lake Como look, a vintage Riva for the icon.
  3. Choose the length. Two hours for the central lake; three or four with Villa del Balbianello or a stop ashore.
  4. Choose the time. Morning for calm water, late afternoon for golden light. Sunset slots sell out first.
  5. Ask what is included. The captain, fuel, drinks, towels, a swimming stop, the cancellation policy and the plan for bad weather.
  6. Book early for high season. From May to September, the best boats and times are reserved weeks in advance.
  7. Keep the surprise safe. If you are proposing, book it as a "sunset cruise" and keep every message on your own phone. For more ideas, read how to plan a surprise proposal on Lake Como.

What to Wear on a Boat on Lake Como

Even on a hot day, the air on the water is cooler and the wind stronger, so bring a light layer, sunglasses and something to tie back your hair. Flat, soft-soled shoes are kinder to a varnished deck than heels. For photographs, flowing fabrics move beautifully in the wind, and soft or rich colours stand out against the blue of the lake. For a true editorial look, the proposal dress package includes a FRAQAIR evening dress.

Book a Private Boat on Lake Como with Lake Como Diary

Lake Como Diary is not a boat rental company. I plan private boat days for couples who want their time on the water arranged, photographed and filmed: the boat and the captain, the route, the timing of the light and the story around it.

  • Private boat proposal package, €5,000. A full day: private boat with captain, a villa or exclusive-use setting, flowers, photography, a cinematic film and a restaurant celebration after the yes.
  • Varenna proposal package, €5,000. A proposal at Villa Monastero followed by a private boat on the lake, with photography and film.
  • Lake Como engagement photography, €5,000. A full day of engagement photography and film, with the option to add 30 to 60 minutes on a private boat. Shorter private sessions start from €1,000 for one hour.
  • Lake Como proposal videographer. Add a cinematic film to any day on the water.

My boat partner: Bellano Water Taxi

For most of my days on the water I work with Bellano Water Taxi, run by Andrea and Alessio from their private dock in Bellano, just north of Varenna. Each of their three boats has its own character: Little Angel, a Comitti limousine with teak finishes; Agata, a Venetian-style water taxi with mahogany interiors; and their newest boat, Victory, a classic Venetian wooden water taxi. If you would like a boat tour without photography, from a one-hour tour of the central lake to a four-hour day on the water, you can book with them directly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Private Boat Tours on Lake Como

Can you rent a boat on Lake Como?

Yes. You can hire a self-drive boat in Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and other villages, or book a private boat with a captain. Self-drive boats with engines up to 40 hp can be driven without a boating licence; each operator sets its own minimum age, usually 18 and sometimes 21.

Do you need a licence to drive a boat on Lake Como?

Not for boats with engines under 40.8 hp (30 kW), which is why most self-drive rental boats on the lake have 40 hp engines. Faster boats need a licence, or a captain.

How much is a boat ride on Lake Como?

A mid-lake ferry crossing costs a few euros. A shared boat tour starts from about €60 per person for an hour. A private boat with a captain costs about €175–€300 an hour for a modern motorboat and €300–€600 an hour for a classic wooden boat.

How much is a private boat tour on Lake Como?

Most couples spend roughly €350–€1,200 on a two-hour private boat tour, depending on the boat. A vintage Riva starts from about €2,000. Always check whether fuel and drinks are included.

How much does it cost to rent a boat on Lake Como?

A self-drive boat starts from about €100 an hour, often with fuel charged separately. A private boat with a captain starts from about €175 an hour.

What is the best boat tour on Lake Como?

For most couples, a two-hour private tour of the central lake: Bellagio, Varenna, Villa Melzi and the Tremezzina shore. Allow three hours to add Villa del Balbianello. If you are staying in Como, a tour of the southern branch shows Villa d'Este, Laglio and Nesso.

How long does it take to get from Como to Bellagio by boat?

About 45 minutes on the fast hydrofoil, and closer to two hours on the slow ferry, which stops at many villages. A private motorboat usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the boat and the water.

When is the best time for a boat tour on Lake Como?

May, June and September for the weather and gentler crowds; July and August for swimming. Go in the early morning for calm water, or the late afternoon for golden light. Most private boats operate from spring to autumn, and some run all year on clear days.

Can we swim during a private boat tour?

Yes. In the warmer months most captains will stop in a quiet bay for a swim. Ask when you book, and bring towels if they are not provided.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Private boats do not go out in storms or strong wind. Ask each operator how they handle bad weather before you book; a good one will move your time or your date. For a proposal, keep a flexible window of a day or two.

Can I propose on a private boat on Lake Como?

Yes, and it is one of the most private places to propose on the lake. Plan it with your captain and photographer so the boat slows in the right place, in the right light. See the private boat proposal package or watch Episode 6.
