The Story of the Afternoon
1. Just a walk
Villa Melzi's gardens begin a short walk from the centre of Bellagio, and they follow the shore. On a summer afternoon there is no more natural thing to do on the lake than to wander through them: the path runs along the water, past old trees, statues and the white neoclassical villa, with the mountains of the Tremezzina across the lake.
For her, that was all it was: a beautiful afternoon and a slow walk by the water. For him, every step along that path was counting down.
2. The rose dress
She wore a rose-coloured dress by FRAQAIR, my couture atelier. I design dresses for moments like this one, because a proposal is photographed in movement: the walk, the turn, the embrace. Light fabric catches the breeze from the lake, and a soft rose tone glows in the warm light of late afternoon, against the green of the gardens and the blue of the water.

3. Beside the Moorish pavilion
At the edge of the water stands Villa Melzi's Moorish pavilion, a small domed folly framed by the lake. That is where he stopped. She turned, and understood a second before he knelt. There is always a breath in that moment, when the person being asked realises that the walk was never just a walk.
4. The ring in the golden light
She said yes. The ring caught the low sun, the lake behind them turned silver and gold, and for a few minutes the gardens felt entirely theirs. This is the part of the day that no one can plan, and the reason I film as well as photograph: the laughter, the hands that will not stop shaking, the first words as an engaged couple.
5. Behind the lens
During a proposal I stay at a distance, dressed like any other visitor in the gardens. I am not there to pose the moment, only to keep it. Once the yes is said, I come closer, and the portraits begin while the emotion is still real.

Golden Hour or Sunset? The Light in Bellagio
Many couples ask me for a sunset proposal in Bellagio. Here is what the light really does, and how to plan around it.
The gardens close before sunset for most of the year. Villa Melzi's gardens are open from late March to the beginning of November, during the day only; at the end of the 2026 season the hours were 10:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. In summer the sun sets after nine in the evening, long after closing. So a proposal inside the gardens is a golden-hour proposal, as in Episode 2: the last warm hours of the afternoon, when the light softens and the lake begins to shine.
The sun leaves the gardens early. Villa Melzi looks west across the lake, towards the mountains of the Tremezzina. The sun drops behind those mountains well before the official sunset time, and the gardens fall into soft shade while the sky is still bright.

Times are approximate, for the middle of each month, and the sun disappears behind the western mountains earlier than this. Always check the gardens' current opening hours before you plan.
Two more practical points. Professional photo sessions in the gardens pay a day fee to Villa Melzi (€350 plus VAT in 2026), so ask your photographer whether it is included.
