Each place on the lake gives a different kind of moment. A famous villa feels iconic but is shared with other visitors. A boat is completely private. A village lane feels spontaneous. Choose the feeling first, then the place. The table compares the places I photograph most.

Villa del Balbianello, Lenno
The most photographed villa on Lake Como sits on the wooded point of Lavedo, with its loggia, terraced gardens and stone balustrades above the water. It is the dream setting for many couples, and there are two ways to propose here. Ashore, in the gardens, the moment feels grand and timeless, but you share the paths with other visitors, and professional photography must be booked and paid in advance with FAI, the foundation that runs the villa. From the water, on a private boat that slows in front of the villa, you have the same view entirely to yourselves, and you do not need a ticket at all.
- Open: March to early January, every day except Monday and Wednesday (2026 calendar), usually 10:00–18:00, and 10:00–17:00 from November
- Tickets (2026): €15 for the park, €25 for the villa and park
- Getting there: a 1 km uphill path from Lenno, about 25 minutes on foot, or a taxi boat from Lido di Lenno
- Photography: paid, and booked in advance with the villa

Villa Monastero, Varenna
If Lake Como has a proposal capital, it is Villa Monastero. According to the newspaper Il Giorno, the villa hosted 79 marriage proposals in 2024, more than any other place I know on the lake. Its lakeside loggia, marble balustrades, fountains and long terraces sit right on the water, facing Bellagio and the mountains. Because Varenna is on the eastern shore, it keeps the warm evening light longer than the western shore.
The villa is open to visitors, so others share the gardens with you. Professional photography has to be arranged in advance, and I take care of it as part of the Varenna proposal package, which includes the villa, a private boat, photography and film.

The gardens of Villa Melzi, Bellagio
Villa Melzi was built between 1808 and 1810, and its gardens follow the lakeshore just outside the centre of Bellagio, past a Moorish pavilion, a lily pond and a monument to Dante and Beatrice. For a surprise, it has one great quality: a walk in the gardens is simply what people do in Bellagio, so nobody suspects a thing.
Two rules shape every proposal here. The gardens close in the late afternoon, before sunset for most of the season. And decorations, setups and drones are not allowed, so a Villa Melzi proposal is a natural one: a walk, a pause, a knee. For a sunset, continue on a private boat afterwards.
- Open: from late March to the beginning of November (10:00–17:00 at the end of the 2026 season, last entry 16:30)

Castello di Vezio, above Varenna
A medieval watchtower on the hill above Varenna, with one of the widest views of the lake: all three branches, Bellagio and the mountains. It is the most dramatic place on this list, and one of the few where I have been able to style a proposal with roses and lanterns, by arrangement with the castle. The castle opens daily from March to early November, with weekend openings in good weather in winter, and it offers evening aperitifs on its terrace by reservation, which makes a perfect cover story.

A private boat on the lake
The most private proposal on Lake Como happens on the water. There are no other visitors, no closing times and no tickets, and the boat can pause wherever the view is most beautiful: in front of Villa del Balbianello, off the colourful houses of Varenna, or at the tip of Bellagio. A boat is also the only way to propose at sunset in front of the famous villas, because their gardens close long before. Plan one to two hours on board: the route, the moment, champagne, then portraits in the golden light. In spring and autumn, choose a boat with a canopy and bring a warm layer.

Bellagio and Varenna
For a proposal that feels spontaneous, the villages themselves are enough. In Bellagio, the stone stairways climb from the water, and the point of Punta Spartivento looks out where the lake's three branches meet. In Varenna, the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, the Lovers' Walk, follows the water from the ferry landing towards the village. Both are public and free, and both are crowded at midday in summer, so plan an early morning or the evening. A hotel terrace or a private villa
If you want complete privacy and a styled setting, with flowers, candles, a table for two or music, the terrace of your hotel or a private villa is the easiest place to create it. The moment can happen exactly at sunset, and dinner is already waiting. Ask your hotel early, because the best terraces are booked for events in summer. Lake Como proposal ideas
- The garden walk. A visit to Villa Melzi or Villa Monastero that pauses at the most beautiful corner. Natural, discreet and easy to keep secret.
- The boat that slows down. A private boat tour that stops in front of Villa del Balbianello, or off Varenna, just as the light turns gold.
- The sunset setup. Roses and lanterns at Castello di Vezio, or a table for two on a hotel terrace, timed to the sunset.
- The early morning. Bellagio or Varenna at 7 am, with the lanes empty and the lake still. The most private proposal on land.

When to propose on Lake Como: months, light and sunset times
The proposal season runs from April to October, when the gardens are open and the boats are out. May, June and September are the favourite months. But the quiet months have their own beauty: a misty November day can turn the lake into a mirror, as in Episode 3.

Times are for the middle of each month in Varenna. On the western shore, around Villa del Balbianello, the sun drops behind the mountains earlier, so I plan the golden light 60 to 90 minutes before the sunset in the table.
The best time of day
There are two perfect windows. The first hour after a villa opens is the quietest time in the gardens, with soft, fresh light. The last two hours of daylight give the warmest light and the most emotional photographs, and are perfect on a boat or on the eastern shore. Avoid the middle of the day in summer: the light is harsh, and the villages and gardens are at their busiest.
How to plan a Lake Como proposal, step by step
- Choose the feeling. Private and quiet, or grand and iconic? Your partner's personality matters more than the fame of the place. Someone shy may love a boat far more than a crowded terrace.
- Match the place to the season and the hour. Gardens close before sunset for most of the year, and some close completely in winter. A boat or a terrace can wait for the sunset.
- Book your photographer first. A local proposal photographer secures the date, arranges the villa's photography permission, and plans the exact spot, the light and the signal with you.
- Create a natural reason to be there. A garden visit, a boat tour, an aperitivo with a view or a dinner reservation. The simpler the story, the better it works.
- Plan the route, not only the spot. Ferry times, the uphill path to Villa del Balbianello, last entry times and parking all decide when you can really be there.

What to wear for a Lake Como proposal
- Give your partner a reason to dress up. A dinner reservation explains an elegant outfit without raising suspicion.
- Soft, light colours look beautiful against the water, the stone and the gardens.
- Think about the path. The walk to Villa del Balbianello is a 1 km uphill path, partly gravel, and the way up to Castello di Vezio is steep. Bring comfortable shoes and change at the top.

Mistakes to avoid
- A sunset plan in a garden that closes at five. Check the closing time and the last entry, not only the opening hours.
- Forgetting the villa's rules. Professional photography is paid and arranged in advance, and some gardens forbid flowers, setups and drones.
- Midday in July and August. Harsh light and the busiest hours of the day.
- Proposing on the day you land. Give yourselves a night's sleep, and keep a second day free for the weather.
- Trusting the last ferry. Evening ferries are few; book a boat or a driver for the way back.
- Choosing the most famous place instead of the right one. The best proposal is the one that feels like the two of you.
- Booking the photographer last. The best summer dates go months ahead.
