Lake Como in Winter: A Romantic Guide to December, January and February

Lake Como Diary — A guide by Nadia Fraqair · Updated 30 October 2026

Lake Como in winter is quiet, misty and deeply romantic. From December to February, days are cool, around 6–9°C (43–48°F), and nights fall close to freezing. Snow at lake level is rare, but the peaks above the lake turn white. Most grand hotels and villa gardens close until spring, yet the ferries run all year, Como lights up for Christmas, and you have Bellagio, Varenna and the water almost to yourselves.

My husband and I live and work an hour from the lake, and we photograph couples here through every season. Winter is the season I love to show people most. The light is soft and silver, mist drifts across the mountains, and a walk by the water feels like it belongs only to the two of you. This guide covers the weather, what is open and closed, Christmas on the lake, the most romantic things to do, and how to plan a winter proposal.

In this guide:

Is Lake Como Worth Visiting in Winter?

Yes, if you love quiet. Winter is the season when Lake Como belongs to the people who live here again. The famous lanes of Bellagio and Varenna are calm, the ferries carry more locals than visitors, and the light is soft all day, never harsh. For a couple, it is one of the most romantic times of year to come.

It is not the season for swimming, long days in villa gardens or the full buzz of summer. Many grand hotels close, some restaurants take a holiday after Epiphany, and the sun sets before five in December. Come in winter for long lunches, misty boat rides, Christmas lights and the feeling of having the lake to yourselves.

Lake Como Weather in Winter

Lake Como has a mild winter for the Alps. The lake itself never freezes and keeps the shore a little warmer than the valleys around it. Expect calm, grey and misty days, some rain, and, after a north wind, clear blue days when the snowy peaks shine above the water.

Month Day Night Sunset
December about 7°C (45°F) about 1°C (34°F) about 16:40
January about 6°C (43°F) about 0°C (32°F) 16:45 to 17:25
February about 9°C (48°F) about 1°C (34°F) 17:25 to 18:05

Sunset times are for the open lake. Along the shore the sun slips behind the mountains earlier, especially on the western side, so the softest light comes in the early afternoon.

What Is Open and Closed on Lake Como in Winter

Winter on the lake is a season of selected openings. Opening days change every year, so always check the official calendar before you go.

  • Public ferries: Run all year on a reduced winter timetable, including the boats and car ferries between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia. The Lecco–Bellagio line runs only from late March to early November. Timetables on Navigazione Laghi.
  • Villa del Balbianello: Open on selected days through December and the first days of January, 10:00–17:00, and in recent years on some February weekends. Calendar on the FAI website, and more in my guide to visiting Villa del Balbianello.
  • Castello di Vezio: From December to March, open on weekends and public holidays in good weather; closed on 25 December. Details on the castle's website.
  • Villa Monastero: Open all winter, Thursday to Monday, 10:00–17:00, and every day over Christmas; closed 25 December. See my Villa Monastero guide.
  • Villa Melzi gardens: Closed in winter; the gardens reopen at the end of March. See my Villa Melzi Gardens guide.
  • Villa Carlotta: Closed in winter. In 2026 it opened early, on weekends in February.
  • Como–Brunate funicular: Runs all year, with views over the lake and, on clear days, the Alps.
  • Hotels and restaurants: Most grand hotels close until spring. Como town stays lively, and many restaurants in the villages stay open, though some close for a few weeks after Epiphany. Book ahead.

Christmas on Lake Como

The heart of Christmas on the lake is Como Città dei Balocchi, the "City of Toys", a festival that has lit up Como for more than thirty years. It usually runs from late November to Epiphany on 6 January. In 2025–26 it ran from 23 November to 6 January.

  • Magic Light Festival: from dusk, light projections play across the Broletto, Porta Torre, Piazza San Fedele and the Teatro Sociale. The best time to see them is between about 17:30 and 21:00.
  • Christmas market: wooden huts with local food and crafts in Piazza Perretta.
  • Ice skating: a rink near the lakefront, with skates to rent.
  • The tree: lit in Piazza Duomo at the start of December, beside the cathedral.

Come on a weekday if you can. The holiday of 8 December, the Immaculate Conception, brings the biggest crowds of the season. Dates for 2026–27 are published by the organisers on cittadeibalocchi.it.

Beyond Como, the villages dress their harbours and lanes in lights, and Christmas Eve and New Year's Day on the lake are quiet, family days. If you dream of Christmas together in Italy, stay in Como for the lights and spend your days on the water and in the villages.

The Most Romantic Things to Do on Lake Como in Winter

1. Take a private boat on a still, misty day

On a calm winter day the lake lies flat as glass, and the villas appear out of the mist one by one. A private boat with a captain, a blanket and a covered seat is the most romantic way to see Lake Como in winter. Read my guide to a private boat tour on Lake Como for routes and prices.

2. Walk Bellagio and Varenna without the crowds

In summer you queue for the famous stairways of Bellagio and the lakeside walk in Varenna. In winter you can stop wherever you like, hear your footsteps on the stones and take a coffee by the water while the ferries come and go.

3. Visit the villas that stay open

Villa Monastero in Varenna stays open from Thursday to Monday all winter, Villa del Balbianello opens on selected winter days, and Castello di Vezio, high above Varenna, opens on winter weekends in good weather. On a clear day the view from the castle tower takes in the whole centre of the lake.

4. Ride the funicular to Brunate

The funicular from Como climbs to the village of Brunate in a few minutes. From the top, the first basin of the lake opens below you, and on a clear winter day you can see the snowy Alps.

5. See Como in its Christmas lights

Walk the old town at dusk, when the light projections begin on the old buildings, then have dinner in Como before the train or the boat back.

6. Take a long lunch by the lake

Winter is the season of long Italian lunches: risotto with perch from the lake, polenta, a glass of wine from Valtellina and a table by the window. Book ahead, especially in January, when some restaurants close for their own holiday.

7. Cross the snowy Alps on the Bernina Express

For snow, go north. From Varenna, a train along the lake and up the Valtellina reaches Tirano in under two hours, where the red trains of the Bernina Express climb through the Alps to St. Moritz. It runs all year and is at its most beautiful in winter.

8. Ski for a day

The ski slopes of Piani di Bobbio, in the Valsassina, are less than an hour's drive from Varenna. Ski in the morning, and be back by the lake for dinner.

Proposing on Lake Como in Winter

A winter proposal on Lake Como is the most private proposal of the year. There are no summer crowds, the boats are few, and the soft grey light is kind to every face. A misty day is not a problem; it is often the most beautiful light of all.

Where to propose in winter

  • On a private boat. The most private place on the lake, and the only way to stop in front of the famous villas while their gardens are closed. Choose a boat with cover in case of drizzle. See the private boat proposal package.
  • In Varenna or Bellagio. A quiet terrace or a lakeside corner, empty in winter, with the mountains behind you.
  • At Villa Monastero, Castello di Vezio or Villa del Balbianello, on the days they open.

How to plan a winter proposal

  • Plan for the early afternoon. With sunset around 16:40 in December, the softest light comes between about 13:00 and 15:30.
  • Keep a second day free. Light mist and drizzle can be beautiful, but in strong wind or heavy rain we move to the next calm day.
  • Keep it warm. A covered boat, a blanket, and a warm café or restaurant booked for afterwards.
  • Keep it simple. In winter, a quiet cover story works best: a boat ride, a lunch, a walk along the lake.

I plan winter proposals with you, keep the secret safe, and photograph and film the moment together with my husband. Full-day proposal packages start from €5,000, and short proposal photography sessions start from €1,000 per hour. Lake Como in December, January and February

Lake Como in December

The most festive month. Como's Christmas lights and market are at their best, the villages light up their harbours, and Villa del Balbianello opens on selected days. Avoid 8 December in Como if you dislike crowds, and book Christmas and New Year's Eve dinners early.

Lake Como in January

The quietest month of the year, and the coldest. After Epiphany on 6 January the festival ends, and some hotels and restaurants close for their own holiday. In return you have the calmest lake, the stillest mornings and the most private walks of the year.

Lake Como in February

The light comes back. Days grow longer, sunset moves towards six o'clock, and the first villas begin to reopen on weekends. For a Valentine's Day trip or proposal, February is the most romantic month of the winter.

Where to Stay on Lake Como in Winter

Como town is the easiest base in winter. It has the Christmas festival, hotels and restaurants that stay open all season, and fast trains to Milan. Hotels such as Hilton Lake Como and Hotel Villa Flori, with its lakeside restaurant, stay open in winter.

Bellagio and Varenna are the most romantic, but fewer hotels open, so check before you plan around a favourite. Varenna has the advantage of a train station, with direct trains to Milan.

The grand hotels of the lake, including Villa d'Este and Grand Hotel Tremezzo, close for the winter and reopen in spring. Outside the Christmas holidays, winter is also when hotel rates on the lake are at their lowest. For the best areas and hotels, read my guide to where to stay on Lake Como.

What to Wear on Lake Como in Winter

Dress in layers. Days by the water can feel mild in the sun and cold in the shade, and the wind on a boat is always cooler than on land.

  • A warm wool coat, a scarf and gloves
  • Flat, waterproof shoes for wet cobbles and steep lanes
  • A knit or cashmere layer for long lunches and evenings
  • A hat and a blanket for time on the water

For photographs, I love a long coat in camel, ivory or soft grey over a dress, or a fine knit in a warm neutral. These colours glow in winter light and never fight with the grey of the lake. As a designer, my rule is simple: one beautiful coat does more for your photographs than any outfit underneath it.
