Lake Como Diary — A guide by Nadia Fraqair · Updated 29 October 2026
Villa del Balbianello is the most famous villa on Lake Como, and you must book your visit online in advance. In 2026 it opens from mid-March to early January, every day except Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:00 to 18:00 (10:00 to 17:00 from November). Tickets cost €15 for the gardens and €25 for the gardens with a guided tour of the villa. You reach it on foot from Lenno, a 1 km uphill walk of about 25 minutes, or by boat to its own landing.
The villa sits on the wooded tip of the Dosso di Lavedo, a small peninsula near Lenno, with the lake on three sides. It belongs to FAI, the Italian National Trust, which keeps its terraces, its loggia and its famous trees in perfect order. It is also one of the places on the lake I photograph most. Every photograph in this guide is mine, taken in the gardens on one golden October afternoon.

Villa del Balbianello Tickets and Prices
There are two tickets. The gardens-only ticket lets you walk the terraces, the loggia and the park at your own pace. The villa and gardens ticket adds a guided tour inside the house, about 50 minutes in Italian or English, in groups of up to 16 people.
| 2026 ticket | Gardens | Villa and gardens |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | €15 | €25 |
| Ages 6–18 and students up to 25 | €11 | €17 |
| Family (2 adults and children aged 6–18) | €42 | €66 |
| Children up to 5 | Free | Free |
| FAI members | Free | €5 |
- Book online, in advance. Booking is required, on the official FAI website, with no extra fee for buying online. Visits are limited each day, so book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for summer weekends.
- Your time is your entry time. With the villa ticket, staff give you the exact start of your tour when you arrive, with a wait of up to an hour. Walk the gardens while you wait.
- Book directly with FAI if you want the tour inside the villa. Many boat trips sell "garden access" in a bundle, which is mostly transport and does not include the house.

How to Get to Villa del Balbianello
You cannot drive to the villa. Everyone arrives either on foot from the village of Lenno or by boat to the villa's own landing.
On foot from Lenno
A path of about 1 km leads uphill from Lenno, partly on gravel, and takes about 25 minutes. A longer trekking route of 2.5 km takes about 45 minutes. Signs start near the church square and the Lido di Lenno. Wear comfortable shoes; the path is not suitable for strollers or for anyone with difficulty walking.
By taxi boat from Lido di Lenno
A small taxi boat crosses from the Lido di Lenno to the villa's landing in a few minutes. In 2026 it costs about €10 each way and must be booked and paid online in advance; cash is not accepted. My tip: take the boat there, so you arrive the way the villa was meant to be seen, and walk back down to Lenno through the woods.
By private boat
A private boat with a captain can bring you to the villa's own landing from anywhere on the lake, from Bellagio, Varenna or your hotel's dock. It is the most beautiful way to arrive, and the only way to see the villa and the loggia from the water. Read my guide to a private boat tour on Lake Como for routes and prices.

By ferry and bus
Lenno is a stop on the public ferry line between Como and Colico. From Bellagio the ferry takes about 25 minutes; check the timetable on Navigazione Laghi, as it changes with the season. From Como, the C10 bus along the western shore stops in Lenno. From the ferry pier, walk along the lakefront to the Lido di Lenno for the taxi boat, or to the start of the path.
By car
Park in Lenno and walk or take the taxi boat. There are paid car parks in the village, but spaces are scarce on summer weekends, so arrive early.
What to See at Villa del Balbianello
The Loggia Durini
The heart of Balbianello is the Loggia Durini, an open gallery of arches at the highest point of the peninsula. Its columns are wrapped in creeping fig, a compass rose is set into the floor, and through the arches you see the lake on both sides: the Tremezzina shore and Isola Comacina one way, Bellagio the other. Its two small rooms hold the library of the explorer Guido Monzino and his maps.

The villa and its baroque staircase
The ochre villa, with its green shutters and carved coat of arms, is reached by a curving baroque staircase with a stone balustrade, framed by spiral-trimmed box topiary. It is one of the most photographed corners of the lake.

The guided tour inside
The guided tour takes you through the rooms as Guido Monzino left them: eighteenth-century French furniture, paintings on glass, Beauvais tapestries and art from his travels. At the top of the house, the Museum of Expeditions keeps the sledge from his North Pole expedition of 1971 and memories of the Italian Everest expedition he led in 1973. Follow your guide's instructions on photography inside the villa.
The terraces and the plane trees
Along the lake, great plane trees are pruned into the shape of candelabra, their branches spreading over the carved balustrade like a roof. In autumn they turn gold and copper, and for a few weeks the terrace glows.

The umbrella holm oak
Below the villa, a great holm oak is trimmed into a perfect umbrella. Gardeners climb into it on ropes to keep its shape, which was designed so that Monzino could see the mountains from his study. Statues line the balustrade beside it, looking out over the water.

The gardens, the bell towers and the views
The park climbs the hill in terraces of lawn, laurel and box hedges, with cypresses, palms, azaleas and wisteria. By the entrance, the twin spires of the old monastery church rise above the agaves. From every balustrade there is another view: the mountains above Lenno, the open lake, the villages across the water.

A Short History of Villa del Balbianello
From the thirteenth century a Franciscan convent stood on the Dosso di Lavedo; its twin bell towers still rise by the entrance. In 1787 Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini turned the site into a retreat for reading and conversation and built the loggia that carries his name. In the nineteenth century the Arconati Visconti family welcomed writers such as Alessandro Manzoni and Silvio Pellico here.
The American general Butler Ames bought the villa in 1919, and in 1974 it passed to Guido Monzino, an explorer who led expeditions to the North Pole and Everest. When he died in 1988, he left the villa, its collections and the peninsula to FAI, with one wish that is still kept: the Italian flag always flies on the pier.
Star Wars, James Bond and the Films of Balbianello
- Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002). The villa became the lake retreat on Naboo, where Anakin and Padmé arrive by boat and marry on the terrace by the loggia.
- Casino Royale (2006). The villa plays the lakeside clinic where James Bond recovers, in the scenes with Vesper Lynd on the lawns and terraces.
Stand at the loggia, look down to the landing and you will recognise both films at once.
The Best Time to Visit Villa del Balbianello
The best season
- April to early June: azaleas, rhododendrons and wisteria in flower, and the freshest green of the year.
- September and October: soft light, fewer visitors, and the plane trees turning gold, as in every photograph in this guide.
- July and August: the busiest months, with queues for the boats in the morning.
- November to early January: quiet and atmospheric, with shorter hours and fewer open days.
The best time of day
Book the first entry at 10:00 for the quietest gardens and soft morning light, or come in the late afternoon, when the sun lights the loggia and the terraces from the side. On a few summer evenings FAI also opens the villa at sunset; check the calendar if you are on the lake in June to September.

How long to stay
Allow one to one and a half hours for the gardens, and add about 50 minutes for the villa tour plus your wait for it. With the walk or the boat from Lenno, plan half a day.
Villa del Balbianello Photo Tips from a Photographer
Personal photographs are welcome everywhere in the gardens. These are the places where I always stop:
- The Loggia Durini. Stand back inside the loggia and let the arches frame the lake. Wait a moment for the people in front to move; the compass rose on the floor makes a beautiful foreground.
- The baroque staircase. Shoot from the lawn below, looking up, so the spiral topiary and the loggia arches fill the frame.
- The lake terrace under the plane trees. In the morning and late afternoon, the sun comes through the leaves. Shoot towards the light for a soft glow, or keep the sun behind the branches for a star.
- The umbrella holm oak. Walk a little way down the gravel path and turn back; the tree, the villa and the mountains line up in one picture.
- From the water. The classic view of Balbianello is from a boat, with the loggia high on the point and the landing below.
Stay on the paths and off the lawns, and keep in mind that professional photography at the villa, including engagement, proposal and wedding photographs, must be booked in advance with FAI. For my couples, I arrange it as part of the day.

Good to Know Before You Go
- Food and drink: there is no café. The bookshop sells water, drinks and small snacks, so have lunch in Lenno before or after.
- Bags: there is no left-luggage service, so travel light.
- Shoes: the paths slope and are partly gravel. Wear flat, comfortable shoes, and bring heels in a bag for photographs.
- Dogs: allowed in the gardens on a lead; only assistance dogs inside the villa.
- Accessibility: the villa is partly accessible, with a lift to some floors; the loggia is reached only by stairs. If you need help, contact FAI before your visit.
- Weather: on a rainy day the loggia and the villa tour still make a beautiful visit, and the mist on the lake can be magical.
A Special Moment at Villa del Balbianello
Many couples dream of Balbianello for the most important moment of their lives. FAI hosts private events at the villa, including civil and symbolic wedding ceremonies, aperitifs and dinners for up to 130 guests, booked directly with the foundation.

For a proposal, my Villa del Balbianello package reserves the villa only for the two of you for two hours, with three hours on a private boat, an hour in Bellagio or Varenna, dinner and up to seven hours of photography, for €12,000. My husband and I plan every detail, photograph and film the moment, and arrange everything with the villa in advance. Compare it with every option in Lake Como proposal packages.
Real stories from the villa: a golden-hour boat proposal at Villa del Balbianello (Lake Como Diary, Episode 6) and a misty November proposal on the water (Episode 3).
