How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Dress for Your Lake Como Wedding

Lake Como Diary — A guide by Nadia Fraqair · Updated 30 October 2026

The perfect Lake Como wedding dress is light, breathes in the heat, moves in the breeze and travels with you in a suitcase. Choose silk chiffon, crepe or a fine lace over heavy satin and layers of tulle, a train you can lift on gravel and on a boat, and shoes you can walk in on cobbles and wooden piers. For a made-to-measure gown, begin about six months before the wedding.

I see Lake Como wedding dresses from two sides. As a designer, I studied fashion design at Istituto Marangoni in Milan and create couture for my own atelier, FRAQAIR. As a photographer, I watch every season how dresses behave on the lake: in the breeze on a pier, on the gravel of a villa garden, stepping into a boat and in the strong sun of July. This guide puts both together. The white dress with the silk rosettes is ARIA, my own design, which I wear myself in the photographs from Varenna. The other photographs are brides and brides-to-be I have photographed on the lake.

Your Lake Como wedding dress at a glance

  • Best fabrics: silk chiffon, georgette, crepe, fine lace and organza
  • Avoid in summer: heavy satin, many layers of tulle and synthetic fabrics that do not breathe
  • Silhouettes: a flowing A-line or bias cut, a fitted lace gown, a fluid column, or a midi for the town hall or a boat
  • Train: a train with a bustle you can lift after the ceremony, a short sweep train, or a detachable train or cape
  • Shoes: block heels or flats for gravel, cobbles and piers; heels for the ceremony and photographs
  • Colour: soft ivory or off-white often looks warmer in lake light than optical white
  • When to start: about six months ahead for made-to-measure; ARIA takes 14–18 weeks in the atelier

In this guide:

Start With the Season and the Place

Before you fall in love with a dress, look at your date. Lake Como changes completely from spring to winter, and the right dress for a July terrace is not the right dress for an October boat ride.

  • April and May: mild days, usually around 18–24°C, cool evenings on the water and gardens in flower. Light silk with long lace sleeves, or a light cape for the evening.
  • June to August: hot and humid, often 28–30°C, with strong sun. The lightest fabrics you can find: chiffon, georgette and fine lace on a silk lining, with an open back or bare shoulders.
  • September and October: warm days, fresher evenings and golden light. Crepe or lace with sleeves, and a cape or a tailored jacket for a boat at sunset.
  • November to March: around 6–9°C by day. Long sleeves, crepe and lace, with a wool or cashmere cape or coat. Read my guide to Lake Como in winter.

Then think about where you will walk. A villa terrace welcomes a long gown and a train. A garden means gravel paths. A boat means stepping down onto a deck. A civil ceremony in a town hall suits a shorter, simpler dress, and many churches in Italy ask brides to cover their shoulders, so bring a cape, a bolero or a veil.

Fabrics That Love the Lake

On Lake Como, the heat and the humidity decide more than any trend. A beautiful dress that you cannot breathe in will show in every photograph. These are the fabrics I choose for the lake, as a designer and as a photographer:

  • Silk chiffon and georgette. Light, breathable and alive in the smallest breeze. They fold small for travel and glow when the sun is behind you. ARIA is cut from a silk chiffon woven in Como.
  • Silk crepe. Matte, fluid and cool against the skin. Perfect for a clean column or a sheath, and soft in photographs even in strong sun.
  • Fine lace. Its texture reads beautifully in photographs. Choose a light lace on a silk lining, and long lace sleeves for spring and autumn.
  • Organza. Gives volume and shape without the weight of many layers.
  • Silk satin. Gorgeous in soft light and in the evening. In the July sun it is warm and shows every crease, so choose a fluid weight cut on the bias.

In high summer I would leave aside heavy duchess satin, skirts built on many layers of tulle and synthetic linings that trap the heat. Ask what the dress is lined with: a silk or cotton lining makes a bigger difference to your comfort than most brides expect.

How fabrics look in my photographs

Fabric is light made visible. Chiffon and lace glow when the sun is behind you, crepe stays calm and matte at midday, and satin catches every reflection of the water. In the open shade by the lake, an optical white can pick up the blue of the sky, while a soft ivory keeps its warmth. If you can, take your fabric outside and look at it in daylight before you decide.

Silhouettes for Villas, Gardens and Boats

  • A flowing A-line or bias cut. The most natural silhouette for the lake. It moves on a terrace, on a pier and in a garden, and it gives life to every photograph.
  • A fitted lace gown with a train. The most romantic look for a villa: lace that follows the body, long sheer sleeves or bare shoulders, and a train that spreads across the stones. Choose a light lace on a soft lining, and plan a bustle for walking.
  • A fluid column or sheath in crepe. Modern and elegant on villa staircases and marble terraces. Make sure you can step into a boat in it: a soft skirt or a slit helps.
  • A midi. Ideal for a civil ceremony in a town hall, a boat, an elopement or the day after the wedding.
  • A short dress. A beautiful second look for the party, or for a small civil ceremony before a long dinner.

The train

A long lace train is breathtaking on Lake Como. Spread across the steps of a villa staircase or around you on a lakeside terrace, it becomes the most beautiful photograph of the day. Between those moments, though, you will walk on gravel paths and stone steps, and perhaps step onto a boat. Ask your dressmaker for a bustle, so the train can be lifted after the ceremony and the portraits, or choose a detachable train or cape. A cape of light chiffon, like ARIA's, gives you the movement of a train without dragging it across a garden.

White, Ivory or a Touch of Colour

Lake Como light is full of reflections: the water sends back blue, the gardens send back green, and the sun is strong for most of the day. In this light, a soft ivory, off-white or warm champagne often looks warmer on the skin than an optical white, and it keeps the texture of lace and chiffon in the sun. Optical white can be beautiful too, especially in crepe, but look at it outside before you choose.

Two whites in lake light: lace by the lily pond of Villa Melzi, and crepe under the round temple of Villa Monastero.

Colour belongs to the rest of the weekend. For a welcome dinner, an engagement session or the proposal itself, few things look as beautiful on the lake as butter yellow, poppy red or soft blush against blue water and green gardens. The colour photographs in this guide were taken at proposals I photographed on the lake.

Wind, Water and Boats

The lake has its own winds. On sunny summer afternoons the Breva blows up the lake from the south, and on the water there is always more breeze than on land. Think of it as part of your dress: chiffon, capes and long hair come alive in it.

  • The veil. A cathedral veil is magical for a few minutes of photographs and impossible on a boat. Fix it with a comb and pins, and plan to take it off for the boat and the party, or choose a shorter veil.
  • Capes and scarves. Light chiffon panels and silk scarves lift in the breeze and make the most beautiful photographs on piers and terraces.
  • Your hair. On the water, a low bun or a sleek ponytail survives the wind better than loose waves.

Getting on and off a boat

Many Lake Como weddings include a boat: an arrival at the villa, portraits on the water or a sunset after dinner. Lift your skirt with one hand and give the captain the other, step down slowly and sit on a clean, dry towel. Soft skirts and slits make it easy; very structured skirts and long trains make it hard. Read my guide to a private boat tour on Lake Como.

Shoes for Gravel, Cobbles and Piers

The ground is the detail most brides forget. On Lake Como you will walk on surfaces that a city wedding never asks of you:

  • Gravel. The garden paths of Villa Melzi and Villa del Balbianello are gravel. Thin stilettos sink; block heels, platforms and flats do not.
  • Cobbles and stairways. The lanes of Varenna and Bellagio are stone steps and cobbles, and the path to Villa del Balbianello climbs about a kilometre from Lenno. Read my guide to visiting Villa del Balbianello.
  • Wooden piers. Thin heels catch between the boards.
  • Boats. Flat, soft soles are safest on deck, and many captains prefer them.

My advice is two pairs: beautiful heels for the ceremony and the portraits, and elegant flats or low block heels for walking, the boat and the party. Wear both at home for a few days before the wedding.

Travelling With Your Dress and Getting Ready

On the plane

Never check your wedding dress in the hold. Carry it on in a breathable garment bag, and ask your airline in advance whether it can be hung or placed in the cabin. Light fabrics travel best: silk chiffon folds small enough for a suitcase, while a structured gown with a long train may need its own box.

When you arrive

Unpack the dress the moment you reach your hotel and hang it high, away from the window and the sun. Ask the hotel to steam it, or bring a travel steamer; Italy uses 230 volts, so check your plugs. Never iron silk directly.

The morning

Choose a room with a large window for getting ready: it gives the softest light for your photographs. Keep a small kit close by, with safety pins, double-sided tape, a stain pen, and a needle and thread in the colour of your dress. Allow at least half an hour to dress, especially for lacing or rows of buttons.

How Your Dress Looks in Photographs

As a photographer, these are the things I wish every bride knew before choosing her dress:

  • Movement is everything. A dress that moves when you walk, turn or dance gives life to every frame. Try walking and turning in it at your fittings.
  • Backlight is your friend. When the sun is behind you, chiffon and lace glow. I plan portraits for the morning and late afternoon, when the light is low and soft.
  • Your back is in many photographs. During the ceremony, your guests and my camera often see you from behind. A beautiful back, buttons or a low neckline count.
  • Necklines frame the view. Off-the-shoulder and square necklines frame your face and the lake behind you.
  • Do the hug test. At your fitting, sit down, climb a step, raise your arms and hug. If you can do all four comfortably, you will look natural all day.

Some of my favourite photographs of a dress are the quiet ones: a moment alone before the ceremony, the veil falling down your back, the lace resting on the marble floor of a villa. Choose a dress that is as beautiful from behind as from the front.

When to Order Your Lake Como Wedding Dress

A destination wedding adds time to every step: fittings, travel and the weeks the dress needs to arrive. Plan backwards from your date:

  • 9 to 12 months before: choose your venue and season, book your photographer, and start looking at silhouettes and fabrics. Many bridal boutiques ask for this much time for their gowns.
  • About 6 months before: begin a made-to-measure dress. ARIA takes 14–18 weeks in my atelier, plus the consultation and the fittings. For a summer wedding, start in the winter.
  • 2 to 3 months before: fittings, shoes, veil and accessories, and your second look.
  • 2 to 3 weeks before: the final fitting, the garment bag and your plan for the flight.

ARIA: A Wedding Dress Made in Milan for the Lake

I designed ARIA for exactly the day this guide describes. The bodice is covered in silk rosettes worked by hand from the same fabric, rosettes sit at the shoulders, and long panels of chiffon fall from the straps like a cape. The skirt is cut on the bias and falls to the floor, with a slit that lets you walk, climb onto a boat and dance. The silk chiffon is woven in Como, about thirty minutes from my atelier, and the whole dress packs small enough to travel in a suitcase.

  • Made to measure in Milan: each gown is cut by hand from a pattern made for you in my atelier, never from stock.
  • Time: 14–18 weeks in the atelier.
  • From anywhere: a consultation and measurements by video in your time zone, or in person in Milan, then two fittings, remotely or in Milan, with all alterations included.
  • Delivery: worldwide, fully insured and packed to protect the silk.
  • Price: from €3,900. Nothing is charged until the dress is agreed and begun.

Because I am also your photographer, ARIA can come together with the photography and film of your wedding day: the same eye that designed the dress decides how it moves in the light.

More Than One Dress: The Proposal, the Welcome Dinner and the Party

A wedding on Lake Como is rarely a single day. There is often a welcome aperitivo or dinner, the ceremony and the dinner, a party, and a slow brunch the morning after. Many brides plan two or three looks: the gown for the ceremony, a short lace dress or a jumpsuit for the party, and a colour for the welcome dinner.

For many couples, the story begins even earlier, with the proposal. If you are planning to propose on the lake, my proposal package with a FRAQAIR evening dress includes a dress she keeps forever, chosen with you, with the whole day planned, photographed and filmed around it.

Lake Como Wedding Dress: Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of wedding dress is best for Lake Como?

A light, breathable dress that moves: a flowing A-line, a bias cut or a fluid column in silk chiffon, crepe or fine lace. Choose a train you can lift on gravel and on a boat, and a dress you can walk, sit and dance in.

What fabric is best for a summer wedding in Italy?

Silk chiffon, georgette, silk crepe and fine lace on a silk lining. They breathe in the heat and humidity of July and August. Avoid heavy satin, many layers of tulle and synthetic linings that trap the heat.

Is a long train a good idea for a Lake Como wedding?

Yes, for the ceremony and the portraits: a long lace train is breathtaking on villa staircases and terraces. Make sure it has a bustle, so you can lift it on gravel paths, stone steps and boats, or choose a detachable train or cape.

What shoes should a bride wear at a Lake Como villa?

Two pairs: heels for the ceremony and portraits, and flats or low block heels for gravel paths, cobbled lanes, wooden piers and boats. Thin stilettos sink into gravel and catch between the boards of a pier.

Will my veil work in the wind on Lake Como?

Yes, for the ceremony and a few photographs. On sunny afternoons a breeze often blows on the lake, so fix your veil with a comb and pins and take it off for the boat and the party.

Should I choose white or ivory for Lake Como?

Both can be beautiful. In the strong, reflected light of the lake, a soft ivory or off-white often looks warmer on the skin and keeps the texture of lace in the sun. Look at your fabric outside in daylight before you decide.

How do I travel to Italy with my wedding dress?

Carry it on the plane in a breathable garment bag and never check it in. Ask your airline in advance where it can travel in the cabin, unpack it on arrival and ask your hotel to steam it.

Do I need to cover my shoulders for a church wedding in Italy?

Many churches in Italy ask brides to cover their shoulders during the ceremony. A light cape, a bolero or a long veil solves it, and you can take it off for the photographs and the party.

When should I order my dress for a Lake Como wedding?

Start looking 9 to 12 months before the wedding. For a made-to-measure dress, begin about six months ahead; ARIA takes 14–18 weeks in the atelier, plus the consultation and two fittings.

Can I have a made-to-measure wedding dress made in Italy?

Yes. ARIA is made to measure in my Milan atelier, in silk chiffon woven in Como, from €3,900. The consultation and measurements can be done by video from anywhere, with two fittings remotely or in Milan and insured delivery worldwide.

How many dresses do brides wear for a Lake Como wedding?

Many brides plan two or three looks for the weekend: the gown for the ceremony, a short dress for the party, and a dress in colour for the welcome dinner.
